Terrorists or Assassins
10 February 2010
Many companies experience “staff problems” and no doubt we’re all aware of the notion of the office terrorist, but what if the terrorist is on the board?
Dealing with damaging behaviour at board level can be very stressful… and a real threat to the operational effectiveness of the business. Its undoubtedly true that what got you here won’t necessarily get you there… and equally true that who got you here won’t necessarily get you there either, especially if those key people don’t recognise the need to change.
So what’s going on when this sort of situation develops?
I think it’s all about Awareness; if people recognise the impact their behaviour is having and buy-in to the need to change it then you have a fighting chance of being able to effect change… but all too often individuals get stuck in denial. It’s even easier for this to happen when the individual is one of those running the company and doesn’t feel they’re answerable to anyone else for their behaviour.
It’s one of the areas where introducing outsiders into the business can help; an unbiased perspective and a reality check can be what’s needed to help an individual recognise the need for change and the consequences of not doing
… followed up by the right sort of support to help them through it.
