Effective Performance Management

27 September 2010

Great methodology from the CEO of WD40 and Ken Blanchard “Don’t mark my paper, teach me how to get an A”. This very definitely aligns with our observations and philosophy: most business owners want a team of winners.

The key question being “how do I get a team of winners?”. The answer; you focus on getting them to be winners, by setting clear objectives and trying your best to help them to achieve those objectives. That includes living to the company’s values as well as their performance measures. Too often the performance management system is a chore that managers have to go through. Rather than the most exciting part of their job – helping their team grow.

Garry Ridge (WD40 CEO) offers a great tip:

Get your team to assess themselves

Together you set and agree their objectives for the year. Then sit down with each member of your team once a month and get them to:
a. Rate their performance
b. Let you know where they need your help to get an A

In this way everyone in your organisation only has to do one appraisal – their own. This takes the chore of out of the task and enables you, the manager, to focus on how to help them get an A.

Try it!

P.S. WD40s revenue per employee is over $1m – so he is doing something right.
